Buechel To Get Crossing Gates

After weeks of uncertainty, Councilman Steve Magre (D-10) reports that the effort to install needed railroad crossing gates at a dangerous intersection in Buechel is moving forward again.

“I have received confirmation from the Transportation Cabinet of the Commonwealth of Kentucky that an agreement has been signed with the Norfolk Southern Railroad to get the process moving to get these gates installed,” said Magre. “This is welcome news to the people of this area who have been in fear of another deadly accident involving a train.”

Since this past spring, installation of the railroad crossing gates has been a top priority following a series of fatal automobile accidents and injuries at Crawford Avenue and Buechel Avenue.

Over the course of the summer, the Councilman has overseen the removing of a tree near the tracks that was requested. Speed bumps and new stop signs have been installed. New striping has been included on the road.

The Commonwealth had signed off on an agreement with the railroad to move forward with the installation which many had hoped would begin by summer’s end.

 “I am glad the details and the fine print so to speak has been worked out, agreed upon and signed off on,” said Magre. “It’s clear the Norfolk Southern representatives understand that those gates need to be put up as soon as possible so the people in that area can rest easier and be safe as they travel. My thanks to all parties who made this possible.”
