Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24) is commemorating the Week of Valor by honoring Purple Heart Veterans in a special way. As part of an effort to show these veterans their sacrifices have not gone unnoticed, Flood will partner with the Parking Authority of River City (PARC) by introducing legislation to allow Purple Heart license plate owners the opportunity to park for two hours at any Louisville Metro parking meter at no charge.
“It’s a very small gesture to let these Purple Heart Veterans know that they are appreciated,” said Flood. “This benefit doesn’t even come close to what they have done for our country. What greater sacrifice could be given, being injured or giving your life for people that you do not even know?”
In making the announcement, Councilwoman Flood was joined by Executive Director Tiffany Smith, PARC; Heather French Henry, Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Affairs; Mayor Greg Fischer; Commander Chapter 146, Military Order of the Purple Heart and Purple Heart recipient C.M. Smrt; and Lucian (Lucky) Young, Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient of the Vietnam War.
The Purple Heart is an extraordinary honor. It is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of an Armed Force that has been wounded or killed in combat. The Purple Heart differs from all other decorations in that an individual is entitled to this award upon meeting specific criteria.
Exhibiting the Purple Heart license plate will allow the recipient two free hours parking at any Louisville meter. Purple Heart documentation is needed when applying for the plate at the County Clerk’s office. Currently, there are 286 plate owners in Jefferson County and 2,488 statewide.
“PARC is pleased to participate in this new opportunity to honor the men and women who have courageously served and protected our country and received such distinguished recognition,” said Smith. “We are excited about partnering with Councilwoman Flood’s office to make a greater impact through our programs, including this new parking program for Purple Heart veterans.”
Flood sponsors a drive starting every February 14th that collects toiletries and snacks for active military that are stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The “Doing Our Part From the Heart” campaign will celebrate its 10th year in 2016.
PARC also participates in other veteran and active duty contribution programs throughout the year, where parkers are allowed free parking at an event with a contribution of items needed by soldiers.
