Metro Council Members Host Body Cam Forum

As Louisville Metro Police move forward with plans to expand the use of body cameras for all Officers, Metro Council President David Tandy (D-4) and several members of the Metro Council will host a forum for the public on Tuesday, July 14th as a way to get questions answers and see a demonstration of how the cameras work.

“It is important that the every citizen become acquainted with how our officers will use these cameras when they come in contact with the public,” says Tandy. “LMPD is to be commended for moving forward with this effort and continue the good community policing efforts that began back when this merged government began.”

LMPD Chief Steve Conrad will be on hand for a demonstration of the camera and he and other officers will answer questions about the policies and procedures that are being finalized as the cameras are expanded into other LMPD Divisions over the summer.

Joining the President as hosts of the forum are Council members Jessica Green (D-1), Mary C. Woolridge (D-3), Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5), David James (D-6), Steve Magre (D-10), Marianne Butler (D-15) and Dan Johnson (D-21).

“I'm excited that 2nd Division will be next in line to receive the body cameras. I encourage any curious resident to come out and see first-hand how this technology works,” says Hamilton.

“As this new program begins it is important that everyone have an understanding of how officers will approach anyone on the street. Unlike other cities, we are fortunate to have a chance to hear directly from LMPD and ask questions on how this is going to work,” says Green.

The Metro Council approved the purchase of the cameras in the FY 2016 Budget. LMPD has already begun a pilot program using the cameras in its Fifth Division.

The Body Camera Informational Forum is set for Central High School located at 1130 West Chestnut Street from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. There will be a short presentation by LMPD followed by a question and answer period. Attendees will be given notecards when signing in at the forum so they may write down their questions for LMPD.
