With Insider Louisville’s reporting of Senator Paul’s interest in advancing the idea of the VA purchasing Jewish Hospital, there is a piece to this puzzle that has not made its way to public purview. What to do with the now VA owned property in the East End? If they sell the property at "fair market value" it will be a huge embarrassment for them when the sales price is millions less than the orchestrated amount they paid. I have a solution that will positively benefit everyone, solve a problem and spare the VA the above-mentioned awkwardness. Turn the property into an addition of Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.

National cemeteries, including Zachary Taylor as well as even Arlington are either out of space or very near capacity. Sadly, the need for honoring our military will never end. Additional acreage is almost at critical mass. The property at the confluence of US 42, KY 22 and the Watterson is close in proximity to Zachary Taylor, will not create a traffic nightmare, will satisfy the concerns of neighbors, and allow the VA to retain ownership of the land. It cannot be denied that more cemetery space is needed. The Watterson property lends itself quite nicely as a final resting place.

When I ran for Metro Council, I opposed building the hospital on the Watterson site. It was a bad idea then and it remains a bad idea today. Retaining federal ownership of the property but using it for an addition to Zachary Taylor is an idea that should be thoroughly examined. If you agree, use the power of your opinion to tell elected representatives to make this happen.
