Mayor Fischer Opens Heritage Green Neighborhood Activity Center

Heritage Green, one of the largest multifamily projects in the region, opened a new activity center Wednesday in South Louisville. The completion of this space was made possible by a unique partnership between the Louisville Redevelopment Authority, Underhill Associates, Metro Parks and Louisville Metro Government.

“Louisville is once again reaffirming its commitment to affordable housing in this Heritage Green space,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “This new activity center will continue to add to the quality of place in South Louisville and foster a welcoming area for this traditionally diverse community.”

Upon Heritage Green’s completion, it will have over 500 one, two, and three bedroom units on 29 acres. Through a unique redevelopment plan, Underhill Associates intends to preserve this asset through a comprehensive rehabilitation.  The Heritage Green project keys on renovation of the Americana Community Center and development of this new park and multi-use, multi-purpose public activity center that is being dedicated to the Metro Parks system.

The park will include a multi-purpose field, children’s playground, picnic area and half-mile walking path. Once completed it will allow for and encourage various types of activities and exercise from walking to soccer and football games.

“Parks and community activity centers like the one we are dedicating today were identified in Vision Louisville, Louisville’s 25-year vision for the built environment,” said Gretchen Milliken, Director of the Office of Advanced Planning. “The overall Heritage Green project touches upon a number of the Vision Louisville goals, including healthy and active living and complete neighborhoods.”

The development of this area in south Louisville dates back to World War II when the adjoining United States Navy Ordinance station created the Americana Apartments for returning officers from the war.
