Hayfield Dundee
Located in Louisville’s Eastern Highlands, the Hayfield Dundee Neighborhood is a community of 2500 persons, occupying a little over one-half square mile, and stretching from Atherton High School in the North, to the Watterson Expressway (I-264) in the South; and between Newburg Road on the West, and Bardstown Road on the East.
The Hayfield Mansion, located at 1809 Tyler Lane, is an Antebellum structure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Situated on a hill overlooking the South Fork of Beargrass Creek, the two-story Greek Revival design mansion is the only remaining building on what was once a large plantation, with many barns and outbuildings. The estate was subdivided into single-family dwellings, during the 1960s.
The nearest neighbors to Hayfield were the slave plantations of Bashford Manor, to the South, and Farmington, to the East. In the Summer of 1841, a young lawyer from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln stayed at Farmington with its owner, Lincoln’s old friend and former business partner, Joshua Speed.
In their almost daily horseback rides around the neighborhood, Josh and Abe would certainly have ridden along what is now Wickland Road, and doubtless would have stopped for a cool drink at Hayfield’s springhouse; located on the exact spot Thomas McAdam’s home now stands. More than likely, the dipper of cool spring water would have been handed up to the future president by the hands of one of Hayfield’s Negro slaves.
Built as a country home in the mid-1830s, Hayfield was the residence of some of the community's most prominent citizens. The main house was constructed by Colonel George Hancock, a Virginian by birth, who came to Kentucky in 1819. He first married Eliza Croghan, a niece of William and George Rogers Clark, and lived with her at Locust Grove, a neighboring plantation, across Bardstown Road to the East. Upon Eliza’s death in 1833, he married Mary Davidson the following year, and shortly thereafter built a new home which he named Hayfield. Hancock was a gentleman of taste and refinement, educated at Yale, and elected to the Virginia legislature.
