Not every issue to be dealt with by municipal government is earth-shattering in import.  Occasionally, even the mundane, day-to-day demands made of city services deserve some notice.

This brings us to the unsightly and ubiquitous piles of pigeon guano, over on Taylor Boulevard.

As a way to deal with a sanitary problem at the underpass of Taylor Boulevard and the Watterson Expressway, Councilwoman Marianne Butler (D-15) is partnering with Metro Public Works and the State Transportation Cabinet to clean up the pigeon problem affecting sidewalks in the area.

“Beginning this week, we will try something new to keep the pigeons from nesting over the sidewalk portions of the underpass,” says Butler. “Anyone who uses the sidewalks here knows just how bad the pigeon droppings have become and it’s a health issue we want to correct.”

Public Works crews, in coordination with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, will begin installing preventive materials in the underpass to keep the pigeons from nesting. The plan will cause no harm to the pigeons and hopefully keep them away from that portion of the underpass.

Motorists and pedestrians should be advised that crews will begin cleaning the overpass area near the sidewalks starting today.  Once the area is cleaned, installation of preventative material along the underpass will begin.  At least one lane of traffic will be closed during this time.
