Back To School At Neighborhood Place

Neighborhood Place locations in Louisville will offer four back to school events in August, a variety of healthy cooking classes, five energy-saving workshops plus much more. Back to School Events

Aug. 1, Back to School Distribution at Ujima Neighborhood Place DuValle Education Center side parking lot, 1 – 3 p.m. Located at 3610 Bohne Ave.  Call 485-6710 for more information. Held in conjunction with the "Village of Park DuValle Annual Neighborhood Appreciation Day", school supplies will be distributed (while supplies last) and other helpful resources will be available.  Sponsored in part by Ujima Neighborhood Place and Louisville Metro Department of Community Services.

Aug. 1, Back to School Event at Meyzeek Middle School, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located at 828 S.Jackson St.  Call 485-8299 for more information.  This Back to School event will provide school supplies on a first-come, first-served basis and offer parents the opportunity to interact with other community agencies.  All children must accompanied by an adult parent or guardian, and adults must have a student with them in order to receive supplies.  We are unable to provide supplies to children accompanied by their daycare provider.  Sponsored in part by 810 Barret Ave. Neighborhood Place and Louisville Metro Department of Community Services.

Aug. 1, Back to School Fest at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located at 1501 Rangeland Rd.  Call 962-3160 or 485-3889 for more information.  Free, grade-appropriate school supplies (while supplies last) and free lunches for kids served by JCPS Nutrition Services.   Community Resource Fair provided including diabetes and blood pressure checks, YMCA program, voter registration, library services and plus lots of music and fun.  Sports physicals offered for $20 (cash only) and dental screenings offered by Gordon Dental Associates.  Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Aug. 6, Northwest Back to School Festival at Northwest Neighborhood Place, 2 – 4 p.m. Located at 4018 West Market St.  Call 485-7230 for more information.  Open to students from kindergarten through high school.  Free backpacks  loaded with essential school supplies for the coming year will be distributed while supplies last.  Educational and community vendors will be on-site including the Shawnee Clinic to help schedule health physicals for family participants, plus Kidz Zone will be available for all to enjoy.  Students must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.  Sponsored by Northwest Neighborhood Place, Louisville Metro Community Services, Kidz Club, JCPS FRYSCs, and Service for Peace.

Other Events in August

Tuesdays, Aug. 4 through Sept. 8, Cooking Matters at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 1 – 3 p.m.  Located at 1411 Algonquin Pkwy.  RSVP is required by calling 634-6057.  Dare to Care Food Bank will host this six week cooking and nutritional series to help individuals and families prepare healthier recipes.  Participants will get grocery items to prepare the recipes at home, a workbook full of tasty recipes and simple cost-saving tips and a gift after completing the course.

Aug. 11 and 25, Extreme Couponing 101 at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 1 – 2:30 p.m.  Located at 1411 Alonquin Pkwy.  Call 634-6050 for more information and to register.  Local couponing guru, Kim Mapp, will teach tips and money-saving ideas to help participants build extra financial wealth while grocery shopping. 

Aug. 4 and Aug. 18, Legal Aid Office Hours at South Central Neighborhood Place, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Located at 4255 Hazelwood Ave. Call 485-7130 for more information. A Legal Aid Society staff member will be on hand to answer questions, talk about cases that Legal Aid handles and provide referrals.

Aug. 6 and Aug. 20, Nutrition Education Class at South Jefferson Neighborhood Place, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Located at 1000 Neighborhood Place.  Call 772-8588 for more information and to sign up for classes.  Offered monthly on the first and third Thursdays, these sessions help kids and parents learn about healthy cooking, being active and losing weight as a family. Cooking supplies and other incentives are provided.  Sponsored by the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension and the Family Health Centers of Louisville.

Four opportunities for WeCare Energy Efficiency Overview.  Call 1-800-356-5467 for more information.  Representatives from the WeCare Program at LG&E will be on hand to talk with interested persons about energy efficiency, energy usage and tips to reduce utility bills. WeCare staff can also help determine if households are eligible for a variety of free services including air duct sealing and insulation, attic and wall insulation, programmable thermostats and much more.

Aug. 6, 13 and 20, Finding the Right Job at South Central Neighborhood Place, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Located at 4255 Hazelwood Ave. Please call 485-7135 to RSVP.  Join one or all three of these sessions to gather information on employability skills, successful job searches as well as how to find the right job and keep it.  After completing the workshop, participants are provided weekly job search assistance and ongoing support from a Jewish Family and Career Services coach after employment for at least 90 days.

Aug.  10, Start Fresh! Workshop at 3400 Lees Lane, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.  Located at Farnsley Middle School.  Call 485-6826 to register.  Start Fresh! is a workshop for individuals who want to gain new information and tools to use second-chance or new checking accounts. This workshop will help you think about your relationship with money and plan how you will make mainstream financial services work for you. When you finish this workshop, you’ll get a certificate you can use to open a new account with one our partnering financial institutions. Aug. 11, Healthy Journey for Two Educational Baby Shower at 3400 Lees Lane, 3 – 5 p.m.  Located at Farnsley Middle School.  Call 485-6826 or 859-553-5305 to register for the class.  Learn how to take care of yourself and baby while pregnant and receive resources, information and lots of free gifts. Aug. 11, Blood Pressure Checks at Ujima Neighborhood Place, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.  Located at 3610 Bohne Ave. Call 485-6145 for more information. Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness educators will provide free blood pressure checks.

Aug. 11, Legal Aid Expungement Clinic at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Located at 1411 Algonquin Pkwy. Call 634-6057 to register and for more information.  A Legal Aid Society attorney will be on hand to discuss expungements and provide one-on-one reviews to determine if individual records qualify for an expungement.  Expungement of record is "the process by which criminal records can be destroyed/removed.

Children and adults will have an opportunity to check out books, apply for library cards and learn more about programs sponsored Louisville Free Public Library.

Aug. 18, Basic Estate Planning Workshop at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 12 – 1 p.m.  Located at 1411 Algonquin Pkwy.  Contact Joseph.Cecil@louisvilleky.gov to register and for more information.  This workshop provides education about the basic tools of estate planning such as wills, trusts, and powers of attorney.

Aug. 26, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group at Cane Run Neighborhood Place, 1 – 2 p.m. Located at 3410 Lees Ln. Call 485-6811 for more information. This resource/support group will meet on the fourth Wednesday each month to focus on the unique issues that caregivers may have raising younger children.  Aunts/uncles or anyone raising their grandchildren are welcome to attend (adults only please).

Aug. 26, Keep Cool & Keep Your Money at First Neighborhood Place, 1 – 2:30 p.m.  Located at 1503 Rangeland Rd.  Call 962.3175 to register.  Project Warm offers this free home energy cooling workshop with hands-on demonstrations plus a take-home weatherization kit including CFL bulbs, rope caulk, faucet aerators, window screening and more!

Thursdays, Aug. 27 through Nov. 19, Cooper Clayton Stop Smoking Class at South Jefferson Neighborhood Place, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Located at 1000 Neighborhood Place.  Call 772-8588 for more information and to sign up for these free classes.  The Cooper Clayton method to stop smoking provides support and free nicotine patches, lozenges or gum to those that participate weekly.  Sponsored by the Family Health Centers of Louisville.
